Abstract


Introdução: A canela (Cinnamomum verum) tem sido investigada por seus efeitos anti-inflamatório, antibacteriano e antioxidante. No entanto, seus efeitos sobre as doenças crônicas não transmissíveis em humanos são escassos, sobretudo com mulheres na pós menopausa.

Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito da suplementação com canela na composição corporal e parâmetros bioquímicos de mulheres com sobrepeso ou obesidade na pós-menopausa.

Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo longitudinal randomizado, duplo-cego, controlado por placebo com mulheres na pós-menopausa com sobrepeso ou obesidade. As voluntárias foram suplementadas com 2g por dia de canela (n = 15) ou placebo (n = 15), durante oito semanas. Medidas antropométricas, de composição corporal, glicemia e perfil lipídico foram avaliadas antes e após a intervenção.

Resultados: Após a intervenção, o grupo placebo (GP) apresentou aumento significativo da glicemia de jejum (p = 0,006), do peso (p = 0,001), do índice de massa corporal (IMC) (p = 0,001), da massa magra (p = 0,017) e da massa gorda (p = 0,006), alterações não observadas no grupo canela (GC). Quanto ao perfil lipídico, ambos os grupos apresentaram aumento de CT (GC p = 0,005 e GP p < 0,001) e do LDL-c (GC p = 0,003 e GP p < 0,001), e somente o GC demonstrou redução do HDL-c (p = 0,003).

Conclusão: Conclui-se que a canela proporcionou um efeito protetor quanto ao ganho de peso e massa corporal, além de prevenir o aumento da glicemia de jejum das mulheres na pós-menopausa estudadas, sem, no entanto, alterar o perfil lipídico.
