Abstract

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the constituents of the stomatognathic system. When there are changes in the functional and structural character of the joint and the involved muscular system, we have a dysfunction called Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD). To maintain proper head position, the anterior and posterior muscle groups must be in harmony. Objective: to evaluate the correlation of TMD with poor postural position of the head through the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles in its anterior portion. Method: 25 female students from the Faculty of Dentistry of UENP between 18 and 30 years old were selected through the questionnaires RDC II (Research Diagnostic Criteria II), categorizing them in 3 groups: PAIN; TMD; TMD+PAIN. The groups were  underwent postural assessment with Postural Assessment Software (PAS/SAPO) in anterior, posterior, and lateral views. Electromyographic examinations were performed on the masseter and temporal muscles on both sides during situations of isotonic contraction (of mandibular elevation), habitual chewing and isometric contraction (of mandibular closure). Results: There was a moderate negative correlation between the angle of the anteriorization of the head and the right (p = 0.0440) and left (p= 0.0430) masseter muscles in the TMD group during mandibular rest. At maximum intercuspation, the PAIN+TMD group demonstrated a weak positive correlation between the right temporal muscle and the inclination of the head to the left (p= 0.0363). Conclusion: the correlation between TMD and postural head position through electromyographic activity did not present statistically significant values. However, some associations were observed in the TMD and PAIN+TMD groups during mandibular rest and maximum intercuspation.
