Abstract


Embraced within the pulchella-group, which covers 14 species of the genus Alona, Ovalona kaingang was one of the Alona species recently translocated to Ovalona genus by Sinev 2015.Also, it can be confused with Coronatella rectangula, when external general characters were considered. In order to verify O. kaingang molecular identity, we sequenced the DNA barcode region (COI), an efficient tool for this type of analysis. Our results indicate genetic divergence ranging from 4.1% to 23.1% among O. kaingang with other Ovalona and Leberis species analyzed, and corroborate Alona species from the pulchella-group translocation to the new Ovalona genus placement. In addition, the DNA barcoding analysis can be applied not only in future taxonomic revisions as in the resolution of troubles for the puzzle involving the Aloninae species taxonomy.
