Resumo

The crown is an essential component for photosynthetic activity, establishment and tree growth, especially in height. This work aimed to evaluate the hypsometric behavior of Rubiaceae family trees with different crown qualities, using logistic model. Two point springs were selected in the São Nicolau River basin located in area of Atlantic Forest domain at Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Minas Gerais (Brazil). The forest inventory was conducted in 10 plots of 300 m2, with 5 units distributed in each spring. Logistic model was fitted for the height estimate according to the DBH for two categories of crown quality (CA: whole crown and CB: crown with more than half of the broken branches). Similarity between the curves generated demonstrated that the Rubiaceae family can, in some cases, resist certain natural disturbances that cause breaking branches, maintaining growth in height. Therefore, the behavior of hypsometric relationships of Rubiaceae family trees in land surrounding water springs of the São Nicolau River basin was similar between crown qualities.
