Os tumores odontogênicos (TOs) possuem sua classificação baseada em um grupo de lesões de características neoplásicas, determinadas a partir do acometimento de regiões da área maxilofacial, com origem primordialmente determinada segundo um padrão baseado em um comportamento heterogêneo, com características histopatológicos e manifestações clínicas específicas. Tais tumores, são circundados por um tecido conjuntivo que é responsável por formar o estroma, intercalados em uma rede complexa e bem determinada de macromoléculas de suporte, conhecida como matriz extracelular (MEC). Nessa perspectiva, durante a carcinogênese, a MEC pode interagir com diversos fatores de crescimentos e citocinas que estimulam a proliferação, migração, e a invasão tumoral, tornando necessária a busca pela expressão dessas moléculas em TOs. O presente estudo visa estabelecer categorias de interação entre o tumor odontogênico ceratocístico e tumor odontogênico cístico calcificante, bem como correlacionar a expressão proteica de ADAMTS-1 e seus substratos, em diversos tumores de origens distintas. Trata-se de um estudo de base observacional e transversal, de natureza descritiva, com busca esquematizada de pesquisa exploratória em bases eletrônicas e busca manual de citações nas publicações inicialmente identificadas. Nota-se que os proteoglicanos como agrecano, brevicano e versicano são macromoléculas que exibem características estruturais que lhes conferem um grande potencial para exibir múltiplas funções e que participam no processo fisiológico e na homeostasia do organismo, então é necessária a melhor compreensão da regulação do metabolismo e do envolvimento desses proteoglicanos na progressão tumoral.
